FREEHOLD, NJ - On January 16, 2009, Royce Berry, 28, of Asbury Park, N.J., was sentenced to an aggregate term of 18 years in New Jersey State Prison for his role in the March 29, 2004, death of 5 year old Kedar Norris.  Pursuant to the "No Early Release Act," Berry must serve a minimum term of approximately 7 years, 8 months before he will be eligible for release on parole.

An Ocean County trial jury convicted Berry on November 17, 2008, of second degree Manslaughter and two counts of second degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  The three week trial was presided over by Ocean County Superior Court Judge Francis R. Hodgson, Jr., who also imposed today's sentence.  Evidence presented during the trial revealed that in March of 2004, Berry struck Kedar in the abdomen, causing a ruptured intestine.  Kedar was eventually brought to a pediatrician's office for examination, but not in time to save his life.
