Petition to Reduce Size of Proposed Bridge Signage

Newsbrief - Local News

Written by press release Tuesday, 16 February 2010 10:03

HIGHLANDS, NJ - On Jan 17, Highlands Borough Council passed resolution 10-25 asking the New Jersey Department of Transportation to refrain from adding overhead cantilever signage to the Highlands-Seabright Bridge pending the review of alternatives.  Sea Bright quickly followed with a supporting resolution on February 2. The resolution came after a number of area residents expressed concern over the size and location of the DOT's current proposed signs.

DOT rendering of bridge signage.

NJ DOT renderings show large green cantilever signs, like those found on the Garden State Parkway, at six locations on and before the bridge.  Several Highlands and Sea Bright residents have questioned the appropriateness of as well as the need for these signs.  “I saw the size of the sign post beside Off The Hook, and I wondered what was going on.  The DOT website showed these enormous interstate signs on our bridge.  I was shocked!” says Highlands resident James Kibler.  Mr. Kibler, along with his wife Kate Kibler responded by starting a petition (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/keep-the-community-charm) calling for reasonable signage that has so far garnered over 700 signatures.

Town officials have been quick to take up the cause.  Councilman Chris Francy and Mayor Anna Little have been working since passing the resolution to collaborate with the DOT in finding a reasonable solution to the sign issue.  “We hope to establish a dialogue with the Department and find a solution that works for everyone.  We believe this can be a win-win,”  one Highlands resident said.
