Thorne Middle School Honors Its Namesake, Cpl. Horace ‘Buddy’ ThorneWritten by Middletown Township School District Wednesday, 27 January 2010 08:13 Middletown, NJ - The Thorne Middle School Community recently held a special celebration honoring their namesake, Cpl. Horace M. "Buddy" Thorne on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of his death at the Battle of the Bulge. On that fateful day, Corporal Thorne acted heroically to save the lives of members of his company while taking out a German tank, along with several Germans, and sending them into retreat during Nazi Germany’s last ditch effort to stem the tide of WWII. For this heroic action, for which he gave his life, Buddy Thorne was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest honor the United States bestows upon its military. Nearly 50 years ago, the Thorne family entrusted that medal, along with official citations and pictures, to Thorne Middle School upon the naming of that school for its most famous resident.
